Shipping consists of 1,054<\/b> telegrams. These were messages exchanged between captains and shipping agents or shipowners in the 1950s-1960s<\/b>, and they mainly concern cargo loading <\/b>and ship chartering. <\/b>However, there were also telegrams reflecting the personal lives<\/b> of sailors and their families. Radiocommunication <\/b>was a vital part of 20th century shipping<\/b>. In Greece wireless telegraphy<\/b> was first used by the navy in 1910<\/b>, while the ships of the Greek fleet were first equipped with radios in 1912. Currently, the radio operator specialisation has been all but abolished.
The large number of telegrams in this category is due to the important role of shipping in the Greek economy. During the postwar period, Greeks made up the largest group of independent free cargo ship managers, composing an international fleet under a variety of flags, transporting dry and liquid bulk cargo on behalf of various countries. Greek-owned shipping<\/b> corresponded to 1.5% of global shipping in 1947 and sky-rocketed to 12.5% in 1970<\/b>. The main shipowners who appear in the telegrams are Chatzipateras, Skinitis, and Sofianos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
