The collection\u2019s chronological breadth makes it an ideal primary source for studying the history of telegraphy \u2013 as well as private and economic life \u2013 in Greece. A mode of communication that is now obsolete, the telegram \u2013 brief and terse by nature \u2013 preserves the immediacy and power of the moment and of the historical period of which it was a product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image2_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image2_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image2_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image2_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram-768x330.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case in point, we have a telegram from the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century (1903) that has to do with the world of work and the sea. It refers to sponge-fishing operations. The telegram was sent from Tripoli in Libya to a Hydra businessman and sponge-fishing financer. Sponge fishing was the main source of livelihood for the residents of Hydra in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. Especially after the lifting of the Ottoman ban on sponge fishing, Hydra\u2019s sponge-fishing fleets found opportunities to operate off the shores of North Africa, and mainly off the coast of Libya, which had sponges of exceptional quality. The telegram conveys information on the progress of the sponge-fishing operation: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDaskalakis Kritikos arrived. Took four divers by force. Awaiting instructions. Left engines in Benghazi.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image3_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image3_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image3_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image3_quote_A-story-in-a-Telegram-768x565.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipient of the telegram was Verveniotis, one of the prominent Hydran sponge-fishing ship magnates. In a 1908 article in the newspaper \u201cEmpros,\u201d Verveniotis is described as \u201cvery clever, awesome and unbeatable when advocating or on the attack.\u201d The shipowners were accused of saddling ship captains with heavy loans at an interest of up to 30%. In general, it was a profitable, if dangerous, profession. Fatal accidents were common, and the living conditions were miserable.
