The proposal for hiring women telephone operators was rejected by the Hellenic Parliament in 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image1_quote_Women-have-power-in-telecommunications.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image1_quote_Women-have-power-in-telecommunications.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image1_quote_Women-have-power-in-telecommunications-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/image1_quote_Women-have-power-in-telecommunications-768x326.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following protests by the first Greek feminists, women were accepted in telephone exchanges in 1908, under tight restrictions that did not apply to their male colleagues (age, marital status). The international model was also used to exert pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative to hire women at the first telephone exchanges came from Alexander Bell himself, who had conceived of telephony as a household service mainly for the upper-middle class. Young women were more polite than men, more obedient, lower paid and \u201cthey drank less beer,\u201d as one of the first telephone exchange directors in the U.S. said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1964, the Association of Women Telephone Operators of Greece was established, quickly engaging in action to improve wage and rank issues. The power of women telephone operators was based on their professional qualifications and their pivotal position in a telephone system that had not yet been automated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first strike in Greece demanding gender wage parity took place in 1978, with the women telephone operators of OTE achieving partial success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#5a5f62\" class=\"has-inline-color\">In the words of telephone operator Zoe Vlachouta:<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt OTE at that time (the 1970s) \u2013 and for women telephone operators in particular \u2013 the human touch was at its height. Subscribers sometimes didn\u2019t know how to properly ask for the information they wanted, but they knew that the girls would do their absolute best to help. For the people in those areas [remote mountain villages], the telephone was the only connection to the outside world. There were so many times when a telephone call saved lives! We \u2013 the women telephone operators \u2013 were doing social work. That\u2019s the way we were. We took it personally. We sympathized. We tried to find solutions.
