Very soon the new invention proved to be extremely useful, as in <strong>January 1903<\/strong> a Russian icebreaker rescued 50 fishermen in the Baltic Sea who had managed to send out a distress signal before it was too late. However, Marconi&#8217;s invention has mainly been associated with the <strong>sinking of the Titanic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-16.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-16-667x430.png 667w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-16-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-16-768x495.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>April 14, 1912<\/strong>, the day of the <strong>Titanic&#8217;s sinking<\/strong>, four telegrams were sent from nearby steamships warning of icebergs in her path. The captain and especially the telegraph operator of the Titanic ignored the telegrams and at 22:13 the Titanic struck an iceberg. At 22:25 the radio telegrapher, who had ignored the warnings, sent out a distress signal: <strong>&#8220;CQD. Struck iceberg, come to our assistance at once&#8221;<\/strong>. Although <strong>&#8220;SOS&#8221;<\/strong> had been established as an international distress signal since 1906, the British Navy still used the older signal <strong>&#8220;CQD&#8221;<\/strong> which stood for <strong>&#8220;General Call Distress&#8221;<\/strong>. The Titanic&#8217;s second telegraph operator jokingly suggested that they should also send the new distress signal, <strong>&#8216;SOS&#8217;<\/strong>, as it might be their last chance to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-17.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-17-667x264.png 667w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-17-300x119.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_24-17-768x303.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#5a5f62\"><strong>The Telegraphist &amp; the rescue<\/strong> <br><strong>&#8220;Ti dobbiamo la vita&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the signal the <strong>Carpathia telegraph operator<\/strong> heard just before he took off his headset and went to sleep. The <strong>captain of the Carpathia<\/strong> immediately decided to rush to the aid of the Titanic. It took the Carpathia three and a half hours to cross the 100 km separating her from the Titanic. She was able to rescue <strong>706 <\/strong>of the<strong> 2,223 passengers<\/strong>. On the Carpathia&#8217;s arrival in New York, when the rescuers spotted <strong>Marconi<\/strong> on the dock, they thanked him, saying <strong>&#8220;Ti dobbiamo la vita&#8221; (thanks to you, we are alive)<\/strong>. &nbsp;Marconi&#8217;s invention had saved 706 people and would save many more in the decades to come<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Titanic&#8217;s last messages<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":31063,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[58],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31043","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
