Telecommunications and the Supernatural"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Four years after <strong>Samuel Morse\u2019s<\/strong> public demonstration of <strong>the telegraph<\/strong> on May 24, 1844, a new form of communication spread across America: <strong>communication with the dead<\/strong>. In the village of Hydesville, New York, on the night of March 31, 1848, <strong>the Fox sisters <\/strong>began a two-way exchange with the <strong>spirit haunting<\/strong> their home through <strong>coded knockings<\/strong>. The sisters clapped their hands, and the spirit responded with creaks on the wooden floorboards <strong>that corresponded to an alphabet<\/strong>. Newspapers of the time wrote that, through this communication, the Fox sisters had opened a <strong>\u201ctelegraphic line\u201d to the beyond.<\/strong> The Hydesville rappings marked the beginning of the <strong>modern Spiritualist movement<\/strong> in America, which held that the souls of the dead could communicate with the living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The occult allure of <strong>paranormal phenomena<\/strong> flourished unexpectedly during the great expansion of <strong>telecommunications.<\/strong> Spiritualists themselves emphasized their credibility by invoking electromagnetic telegraphy. Books circulated with titles such as The <strong>\u201cCelestial Telegraph\u201d, and \u201cspiritual batteries\u201d<\/strong> were used in s\u00e9ances, where participants held a magnetized cord whose ends were immersed in buckets of copper and zinc water. The reference to <strong>the telegraph<\/strong> distinguished Spiritualism from older superstitions and lent it a veneer of <strong>scientific plausibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-13.png\" alt=\"\u201ctelegraphic line\u201d to the beyond.\" class=\"wp-image-38201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-13.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-13-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-13-768x522.png 768w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-13-667x453.png 667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Call from the Beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the late 19th century, <strong>Spiritualism had begun to decline<\/strong>. Many of the \u201cwondrous cases of communication\u201d were revealed to be frauds. In 1888, the Fox sisters\u2014who had initiated <strong>the \u201cspiritual telegraph<\/strong>\u201d\u2014admitted that they themselves had produced the raps of the dead. Yet the notion that electronic technology could grant access to <strong>\u201canother, invisible reality\u201d<\/strong> was reinforced through 20th-century works of fiction, as well as through new inventions in telecommunications such as wireless telegraphy and the telephone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Agatha Christie\u2019s Personal Call<\/strong> (1954) is a radio play in which James Brent receives telephone calls from his deceased wife. The call gradually uncovers his past: the murders of three women. The play uses <strong>the telephone as a \u201cspiritual medium,\u201d<\/strong> echoing 19th-century Spiritualist traditions. Ultimately, the metaphysical experience is revealed to be a trap, shedding light on the relationship between technology, deception, and the supernatural. <strong>Disembodied electronic communication<\/strong>, which abolishes the limits of time and place, excites the imagination of the public and fosters the idea that it might also dissolve the <strong>boundaries between the natural and the supernatural.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-14.png\" alt=\"another, invisible reality\" class=\"wp-image-38197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-14.png 830w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-14-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-14-768x581.png 768w, https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/MT-Stories-New-Templates_25-14-667x505.png 667w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Past Delusions, New Perils<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notions described above, which today seem exceedingly na\u00efve and childish, have survived into the age of <strong>cyberspace<\/strong> and <strong>virtual reality<\/strong>. Consider the most recent film in the <em><strong>Mission Impossible<\/strong><\/em> series.
