{"id":34773,"date":"2025-07-10T09:09:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T09:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/?post_type=ti-simvainei-sto-mou&#038;p=34773"},"modified":"2025-07-10T09:09:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T09:09:37","slug":"nikola-tesla-born-on-this-day-july-10","status":"publish","type":"ti-simvainei-sto-mou","link":"https:\/\/www.otegroupmuseum.gr\/en\/whats-on\/news\/nikola-tesla-born-on-this-day-july-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Nikola Tesla \/ born on this day, July 10"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On this day, <strong>July 10, 1856<\/strong>, Serbian electrical engineer and physicist <strong>Nikola Tesla<\/strong> was born, a modern Prometheus who led humanity into the age of <strong>electricity<\/strong>, while many of his <strong>approximately 700 inventions<\/strong> influenced the development of <strong>telecommunications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From his student years at the Polytechnic Institute of Graz in Austria, <strong>Tesla <\/strong>was involved in the <strong>development of an engine using alternating current<\/strong>. Later, in Budapest, he envisioned the principle of the <strong>rotating magnetic field<\/strong> and developed plans for an <strong>induction motor<\/strong>, which would be the first step towards the successful utilization of <strong>alternating current<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see today how innovative and forward-thinking his ideas were, with alternating current being the standard for electricity supply worldwide and the <strong>induction motor<\/strong> being used in every <strong>electrical device<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, at that time <strong>Tesla <\/strong>was unable to easily find funding for his inventions, so at the age of 28 he left Europe and traveled to New York. There he met <strong>Thomas Edison<\/strong>, who initially commissioned him to repair the generator of the steamship \u201cOregon\u201d and then hired him in his company. However, their collaboration did not last long, as <strong>Tesla<\/strong> felt that he was not being paid commensurate with his contribution, while the two scientists disagreed fundamentally on the approach to electricity: <strong>Edison<\/strong> was a proponent of <strong>direct current<\/strong>, while <strong>Tesla<\/strong> supported alternating <strong>current<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the years that followed, Tesla&#8217;s work finally began to be recognized. With the necessary support from various financiers, in <strong>1891<\/strong> he proceeded to build the <strong>Tesla coil<\/strong>, which generated and amplified <strong>radio frequencies<\/strong>, forming the <strong>basis for the creation of the radio<\/strong> and later <strong>television<\/strong>. However, it was the Italian Guglielmo Marconi who claimed the paternity of wireless communication (radio) in <strong>1897<\/strong>. <strong>Tesla<\/strong> claimed that <strong>Marconi <\/strong>had used his own patents and took legal action against him, but to no avail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his great disappointment, he returned to his laboratory determined to continue his experiments, and in <strong>1898<\/strong> he announced the invention of a <strong>remote-controlled boat<\/strong>, which could be described as the <strong>precursor to Wi-Fi<\/strong>, <strong>drones<\/strong>, and <strong>Bluetooth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1899<\/strong>, he built a large laboratory with antennas and coils in <strong>Colorado Springs<\/strong>, attempting to <strong>transmit signals wirelessly over long distances<\/strong>. The creation of the <strong>Wardenclyffe Tower<\/strong> in <strong>Long Island (1901-1906)<\/strong> was a continuation of the previous project, and although its operation was abruptly terminated due to a lack of funding, it laid the foundations for the creation of a <strong>global wireless energy and telecommunications network<\/strong>, heralding the future of <strong>satellite communication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The period from <strong>1910<\/strong> until the <strong>end of Tesla&#8217;s life<\/strong> was marked, on the one hand, by <strong>skepticism<\/strong> from part of the scientific community about his theories and, on the other hand, by <strong>awards<\/strong> and new <strong>pioneering ideas<\/strong>, which, however, remained unfinished. On <strong>January 7, 1943<\/strong>, he <strong>died<\/strong> alone and penniless in <strong>New York<\/strong>.
