Tzeni Karezi<\/strong>\u2014the stage name of Eugenia Karpouzi\u2014was one of the most important<\/strong> Greek actresses<\/strong>, distinguished in a wide range of roles in theater<\/strong> and cinema<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was born on January 12, 1934<\/strong>, in Athens, but spent her childhood in various cities, as her parents were teachers. She showed an early love for the theater, participating in children’s performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1951<\/strong>, after graduating from the Greek-French School “Agios Iosif,” she played the role of Antigone<\/strong> in Sophocles’ play of the same name, which was staged by the school’s graduating class at the Rex Theater<\/strong>. That same year, she began her studies at the drama school of the National Theater<\/strong>. In 1954<\/strong>, she made her theatrical debut alongside Melina Merkouri<\/strong> and Vasilis Diamantopoulos<\/strong> in Andr\u00e9 Roussin’s play “Helen of Troy”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1955<\/strong>, she appeared for the first time in cinema<\/strong> in Alekos Sakellarios’ film “Latern, Poverty, and Honor,”<\/strong> followed by more than 30 films<\/strong>, mainly comedies, which established her as a star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She remained at the National Theater until 1959, performing important classical roles. From 1960 onwards<\/strong>, she formed her own theater companies<\/strong>, staging Greek and foreign plays with great success. A milestone in her career came in 1973<\/strong>, when, together with her second husband, actor Konstantinos Kazakos<\/strong>, she presented Iakovos Kampanellis’ “Our Big Circus,”<\/strong> with clear anti-dictatorial symbolism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly before the events at the Polytechnic, the junta<\/strong>, alarmed by the large audience turnout, interrupted the performances and imprisoned Karezi <\/strong>and Kazakos<\/strong>. In 1974, after their release, the play was staged again, with even greater impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Metapolitefsi<\/strong>, he collaborated exclusively with Kostas Kazakos, playing in iconic plays<\/strong> that were hugely successful. In 1985<\/strong>, she performed in an ancient drama for the first time<\/strong>, “<\/strong>Medea<\/strong>“<\/strong> at the Herodeion<\/strong> and Epidaurus<\/strong>, directed by Minos Volanakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her last performance <\/strong>was in “<\/strong>Diamonds and Blues<\/strong>“<\/strong> <\/strong>in 1990-1991. On July 27, 1992,<\/strong> after battling cancer, the most beautiful eyes of Greek theater were extinguished forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
