On July 15, 1965,<\/strong> Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou <\/strong>submitted his resignation<\/strong> to King Constantine II<\/strong>, plunging the country into the greatest political crisis of its postwar history<\/strong>, known as the \u201cJuly Crisis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rift was triggered by the king\u2019s refusal to allow Papandreou to take over the Ministry of National Defense<\/strong>, replacing Petros Garoufalias<\/strong>, who had by then lost the prime minister\u2019s confidence. Constantine refused to sign the relevant decree, citing the ongoing investigation into Andreas Papandreou\u2019s <\/strong>alleged involvement in the case of the paramilitary organization ASPIDA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately after Georgios Papandreou\u2019s resignation, the king appointed the Speaker of the Parliament, Georgios Athanasiadis-Nova<\/strong>, who formed a government with the participation of members of the Center Union<\/strong> who had distanced themselves from their leader. At the same time, Papandreou took the lead in the \u201cuncompromising struggle,\u201d<\/strong> while thousands of citizens flooded the streets of Athens<\/strong> denouncing the \u201croyal coup\u201d<\/strong> and the \u201cgovernment of renegades.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nova government failed to secure a vote of confidence and resigned on August 5. It was followed by the government of Ilias Tsirimokos<\/strong>, which met the same fate. Finally, on September 17, Stefanos Stefanopoulos<\/strong>, with the support of the Palace and 152 members of parliament\u2014including 45 independent members of the Center Union\u2014was sworn in as prime minister<\/strong>, marking the end of the \u201cJulian\u201d period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stefanopoulos government remained in power until December 22, 1966<\/strong>, when it was replaced by the transitional government of banker Ioannis Paraskevopoulos<\/strong>, following an agreement between the king, Panagiotis Kanellopoulos<\/strong>, leader of the National Radical Union, and Georgios Papandreou. The goal was to hold elections by the end of May 1967, but they never took place, as the prolonged climate of instability ultimately led to the colonels\u2019 coup on April 21, 1967<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
