The following year, she made her stage debut, while her film debut came in <strong>1954<\/strong> with <strong>Nikos Tsiforos\u2019s \u201cPontikaki\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating in 1955, she enjoyed a steadily rising career in theater and film. In <strong>1960<\/strong>, she was awarded <strong>First Prize for Best Actress at the Thessaloniki Film Festival <\/strong>for her performance in Dinos Dimopoulos\u2019s <strong>\u201cMantalena\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1961<\/strong>, she formed <strong>her own theater company<\/strong>, with which she staged the play <strong>\u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d<\/strong> that winter. A year later, she experienced one of <strong>her<\/strong> <strong>few artistic setbacks<\/strong> when the production of <strong>\u201cCaesar and Cleopatra\u201d<\/strong> was cut short because the audience did not accept her new look with jet-black hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the same period, she began her collaboration with <strong>Finos Film<\/strong>, starring in some of the most successful films in Greek cinema, such as <strong>\u201cThe Wood Came from Paradise,\u201d \u201cMantalena,\u201d \u201cAliki in the Navy,\u201d \u201cThe Bait,\u201d and \u201cThe Lady and the Tramp.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roles she played \u2012 mostly charming and lighthearted \u2012 played a decisive role in shaping her public image, to such an extent that <strong>her artistic persona became almost completely identified with her personal identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1970<\/strong>, she starred in Nikos Foskolos\u2019s <strong>\u201cLieutenant Natassa\u201d<\/strong>, which remained for decades the highest-grossing film in Greek cinema. Her co-star was <strong>Dimitris Papamichail<\/strong>, with whom she formed the <strong>most famous couple<\/strong> on the Greek arts scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commercial decline of Greek cinema in the 1970s prompted Aliki Vougiouklaki to devote herself almost exclusively to the theater, appearing in a total of over 53 theatrical productions. The rock opera \u201cEvita\u201d, which premiered in 1981 with Vlassis Bonatsos co-starring as Che Guevara, was the greatest theatrical triumph of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1996<\/strong>, she was forced to suspend performances of <strong>\u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d<\/strong> due to a rapid deterioration in her health. <strong>She passed away on July 23, 1996<\/strong>, at the age of 62. Nearly three decades after her death, her work continues to move audiences, and her films are shown continuously, justifying her designation as a <strong>\u201cnational star.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Museum is exhibiting <strong>four rare photographs<\/strong> of Aliki Vougiouklaki from the Floros Brothers Archive \u2012 Nikos L. Floros. The first, taken in <strong>1962<\/strong>, shows her talking on the phone. The second, taken in <strong>1960<\/strong>, captures the couple during a break from filming the movie <strong>\u201cAliki in the Navy\u201d<\/strong>, alongside the then-mayor of Athens, <strong>Angelos Tsoukalas<\/strong>.
