9 June / World Archives Day: The Museum's archives tell their story

On the occasion of World Archives Day on June 9, the Museum presents an excerpt from the videotaped oral testimony of Konstantinos Kostoulas, who served as head of the technical department of OTE Epirus-Corfu from 1960 to 1981.

Kostoulas was hired by OTE in 1959 as a telecommunications engineer and in 1960 was appointed head of the technical department of OTE in Epirus. He continued to advance in his career over the following years in various departments, and from 1972 to 1973 he served as head of the OTE administrator, Leonidas Alexandropoulos. In 1987, he retired with the rank of director. In his testimony, K. Kostoulas recounts his career as a technician and describes the evolution of telecommunications from the analog to the digital era.

In its effort to preserve and highlight the history of telecommunications in Greece, the Museum has recorded a total of 31 oral testimonies from former OTE employees since 2016. The testimonies, which have been videotaped, recorded, and transcribed, are accompanied by documentation and are kept in the Museum's archives.

The Museum's historical archives consist of collections of 7,940 telegrams (1859-1996), 13,320 telephotos (1949-1988), and 6,364 photographs (1903-). In addition, they include archival material from OTE since its establishment (1949), as well as from the Post, Telegraph, and Telephone Directorate (1895-1949), the Greek Telephone Company (1931-1949) and the British company Eastern Telegraph – Cable & Wireless, which was responsible for international telegraphy until 1957.
