Secret Codes

Can light hide secret messages? And how does information travel through an optical fiber?

In this interactive STEM workshop, students become… secret agents on a mission! They learn about optical transmission technology and the science of cryptography, and discover how information is converted into light signals, encoded, transmitted, and finally decoded. Students work together to solve puzzles and decrypt optical communication signals, familiarizing themselves with concepts such as encoding, FDMA (frequency division multiple access), and optical fiber, and cultivate 21st-century skills—collaboration, problem solving, and creative thinking. The team that decrypts the most signals is declared the FIBER Hacker!
