4 days of celebration and interaction at the Museum
In the presence of a total of 557 visitors, the Museum celebrated World Telecommunications Day (17/05) and International Museum Day (18/05) from 16 to 19 May.
Inspired by this year's International Council of Museums (ICOM) theme "Museums and societies in constant change", young and old alike had the opportunity to discover the history of telecommunications through creative and entertaining activities.
Similar events were organized in the other museums of the country, with people giving a resounding presence and responding to the call of an institution that is becoming increasingly popular. It is indicative that compared to last year's events, this year's number of visitors to the Telecommunications Museum increased by 25%. Notably, of the 557 visitors, 166 were individuals, meaning they had not booked their participation in a programme.
A special moment was the hospitality of 99 children and chaperones from the non-profit organizations "Navigation", "Elefsina Love Center", "Amymoni" and "Nestor" Psychogeriatric Society, offering them an unforgettable experience of learning and creative expression.
The activities started on the afternoon of Friday 16 May with the interactive game "Find the word" for children by the "Navigation". The programme was repeated the following day for children from the "Centre of Love Elefsina".
During the weekend of 17 & 18 May, free STEM workshops in robotics and engineering were organized, as well as a storytelling workshop ("Messenger of the Goddess"), while the performance "Call from the Equator" took the audience on a journey to the 1970s and the telecommunications of the time. At the same time, the Museum's staff guided the visitors through its collections. On Sunday, on the recently renovated 2nd floor of the Museum, the Choir of OTE Athens Group gave a special touch by singing and improvising with the children.
The four-day event ended on Monday with the visit of children and adults by the "Amymoni" and the Psychogeriatric Society "Nestor". The participants, guided by a special education teacher, took a tactile tour of the museum's exhibits, demonstrating that with the right practices any vulnerable social group can enjoy the experience of a museum.
This is also this year's message of ICOM: in an era of constant transformation of society, museums should not stand idly by in the face of social changes, but as institutions of education, cultural heritage and social cohesion, they should redefine their role and create new conditions of operation and communication with the public.
