Candle Stick: Make a telephone from paper strips!

Have you ever seen a telephone that looks like a candlestick? Why would the receiver and the transmitter be separate?

To avoid diseases of course, since anyone who wanted to make a call back then (1880) could clean off the receiver with a cloth!
