Andreas Papandreou was born in Chios on the 5th of February 1919, which was the date of today's date. Founder of PASOK and Prime Minister of the country during the periods 1981-1989 and 1993-1996, he left his mark on the formation of the political and party system in post-independence Greece, creating a multitude of fans and fanatical opponents to this day.
On 24 October 1974, the president of PASOK visited Corfu as part of his election tour. There, the photographer Dimis Argyropoulos captured him waving to the assembled crowd from a balcony. Standing around him are members of the local PASOK organization and candidates. In the far right is the journalist and party candidate Giorgos Romaios.
It is recalled that the first free parliamentary elections after seven years of the junta were held on 17 November 1974, with the New Democracy (ND) emerging as the first party and government with 54.37%, while the newcomer PASOK came third with 13.58%.
This photograph and many others of Papandreou are part of the Museum's large collection of telephotographs.
