International Museum Day: the honored Telecommunications Museum celebrates

When?

17 to 20 May 2018

The honored Museum for 2018

Every year the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in the context of celebrating the International Museum Day on May 18, honors a museum for this particular day and for the entire year. For 2018, the honored Greek museum is the OTE Group Telecommunications Museum.

What happened?

In this context, the Museum organized a four-day schedule of events focused on the main theme of this year’s celebration: Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics.

Four days full of activities and educational programs for children, parents and senior people.

The Museum visitors chose themselves how to explore the history of telecommunications. Either digitally, visually, via history or via a tour, they went around the museums of the world in 80 minutes, used their tablet and special apps to “build” telecommunications stories in the sand with the help of the Augmented Reality Sand Box and “travelled” from ancient networks to internet and from fire signals to pc and smartphones, all in order to discover that, in the end, the ingenuity of the past is directly connected to the technology of today and of the future.

Main Event for International Museum Day

On Friday, May 18, at the main event of the Telecommunications Museum, a vast number of visitors and official guests walked around the area, attended the tour and listened to the greetings of the President and CEO Mr. Michael Tsamaz, of the President of ICOM Ms. Teti Hatzinikolaou, of the Corporate Communications Executive Director Ms. Deppie Tzimea, of the Manager of the Museum Ms. Nikoletta Liakostavrou and the main speaker, the Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics & Telecommunications of the University of Athens, Ms. Maria Roussou.

Who visited us

818 people attended the activities and programs of the Museum, with the greatest percentage actively participating in the programs and in the guided tours.
