Polytechnic here!

The Polytechnic Uprising, in November 1973, through a wealth of photographic material from the Museum’s archive.

17 November. A day and an event that shaped the modern history of Athens and the whole country.

Crowds of citizens gathered outside the Polytechnic, anti-dictatorship rallies.

Turmoil at other schools in the city. The uprising is spreads.

Clashes involving shooting and tear gas use by police officers.

“The young people of Greece are paving the way for democracy as the vanguard of the nation,” said former Prime Minister P. Kanellopoulos, expressing the political leaders’ support for the students.

The Museum’s telephotography collection includes 22 photographs depicting the events at the Polytechnic (15-20 November 1973). Most of them are from photojournalist Dimi Argyropoulos. Some of the photographs are now very familiar and classic, like the photographs of students holding placards with anti-dictatorship slogans in the middle of the street. See the photo catalogue here!
